When to Change Your AC Filter: Homeowner’s Checklist
Introduction
A clean filter is vital for AC efficiency, indoor air quality, and preventing system overload. Here’s a simple checklist to know exactly when and how to swap or clean your filter.
Why Change Your Filter Regularly?
Airflow: A clogged filter chokes airflow, making your unit work harder.
Efficiency: Dirty filters increase energy use by up to 15%.
Longevity: Protects coils and blower motor from dust build-up.
Recommended Schedule
| Home Type | Filter Type | Change Frequency |
|---|---|---|
| Single pet, 1–2 people | 1″ pleated | Every 1 month |
| Larger family, 2 pets | 1″ pleated | Every 1 month |
| Allergy sufferers | 4″–5″ high-MERV | Every 3 months |
| Commercial / heavy use | 4″–5″ high-MERV | Every 2 months |
How to Change or Clean
Turn Off Your System
Switch off at the thermostat and at the breaker panel.
Protects you from accidental startup.
Locate the Filter
Often in the return-air grille or inside the furnace/blower compartment.
Remove & Inspect
Slide it out gently.
Hold up to light—if you can’t see light through >50%, it’s time.
Swap or Wash
Disposable: Replace with same-size 1″ pleated filter.
Reusable: Vacuum off dust, rinse under water, air-dry fully before reuse.
Reinstall & Power Up
Slide the cleaned/new filter back with arrows pointing into the unit.
Restore power and test the system.
